SUMMARY:RMAEP Utah Lunch & Learn
DESCRIPTION:Remedial Design Characterization Through Injection Process Monitoring\nJoin RMAEP Utah at Geosyntec’s offices in downtown Salt Lake City on Wednesday\, February 18th\, 2026 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm to learn about remedial design characterization through injection process monitoring with John Fontana of Vista GeoScience! \nIn-situ remediation has become a widely used approach for treating contaminated soil and groundwater\, yet its success depends heavily on how well subsurface conditions are understood and how effectively treatment reagents are delivered to impacted zones. This presentation provides an overview of current best practices for remedial design characterization (RDC) as it relates to injection-based in-situ remediation. \nTopics will include an overview of common in-situ treatment approaches\, reagent selection considerations\, and injection delivery methods\, with a focus on the challenges that often limit performance. Chief among these challenges are accurately defining the vertical and horizontal extent of contamination and understanding the hydraulic properties that control reagent distribution in heterogeneous soils and bedrock. \nRegister Here \n  \n

SUMMARY:Vista Guest Webinar - Evolving the Playbook: Combining ISCO\, Sorption\, and Biodegradation for Petroleum Site Success
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Todd Herrington\, Director of Product Management\, REGENESIS \nPetroleum-impacted sites (e.g.\, UST and oil/gas facilities\, etc.) often present complex remediation challenges due to residual mass\, back diffusion\, and fluctuating groundwater conditions. In addition\, the path to closure for these sites has evolved and at times\, requires integrated remediation strategies. While in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) remains a powerful tool for rapid mass reduction\, it’s increasingly clear that long-term remediation success may also depends on effective sorption and enhanced biodegradation. In this webinar\, Regenesis will outline a field-proven strategy that integrates\, as needed\, oxidation\, sorption\, or biostimulation-based treatment that is tailored to meet cleanup goals at complex petroleum sites. Drawing on years of collaboration with Vista GeoScience and other consulting firms\, we’ll demonstrate how products like RegenOx®\, PersulfOx®\, PetroFix® and ORC Advanced® are used in combination to deliver consistent performance\, mitigate rebound\, and accelerate regulatory closure. We’ll also explore how PetroFix\, a colloidal activated carbon\, is emerging as a leading treatment for both polishing and primary remediation. By combining immediate adsorption with sustained biodegradation support and enabling visual confirmation of distribution via its dark color\, PetroFix enhances both treatment confidence and long-term results. \nKey Takeaways:\n• Why sorption and biodegradation are essential mechanisms for achieving closure at petroleum sites—not just secondary steps\n• How to integrate ISCO (RegenOx\, PersulfOx) with electron acceptors (ORC Advanced) and colloidal carbon (PetroFix)\n• When to use PetroFix as a standalone remedy versus a follow-up to oxidation\n• Real-world lessons from OPS and private sites in collaboration with Vista GeoScience\n• Practical methods to validate injection success using PetroFix’s visual presence in groundwater or soil cores

SUMMARY:In-Situ Remediation 101: Four Decades of Evolving Chemistries\, Technologies & Applications
DESCRIPTION:Presenter:  John V. Fontana\, CPG\, CWD\, Vista GeoScience \nOver the past 40 years\, in-situ remediation has advanced from early experimental injections to a versatile suite of proven technologies. This one-hour presentation begins with a concise history of reagent chemistries and delivery methods\, then moves into an overview of today’s state-of-the-art practices for optimizing injection strategies and remediation performance. \nKey treatment targets—petroleum hydrocarbons\, chlorinated solvents\, dissolved metals\, and emerging contaminants such as PFAS—will be addressed. Attendees will learn about the full spectrum of available reagents\, including oxidants\, reductants\, biological amendments\, and sorption-based remedies\, and how integrated approaches can be combined for maximum impact. The session will also highlight essential elements of the recently released ITRC guidance\, with emphasis on the benefits of remedial design characterization (RDC) and on matching delivery technologies to site-specific challenges like low-permeability soils and fractured bedrock. \nFinally\, the presentation will reflect on lessons learned from early applications—why some strategies fell short—and how advances in chemistry\, design\, and injection technology now lead to greater success. In the end\, remediation remains a “contact sport\,” where success comes from the right tools\, a sound strategy\, and precise execution.

DESCRIPTION:High-resolution site characterization (HRSC) tools provide detailed vertical profiles of subsurface contamination. Some tools also capture lithology data\, which helps develop more complete conceptual site models (CSMs) for light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL). However\, HRSC surveys often occur only once due to the cost of large equipment and mobilization. Meanwhile\, subsurface conditions change over time. Groundwater levels shift\, and soil saturations vary. As a result\, contaminant distributions evolve in ways that one-time surveys can’t track. To meet this challenge\, E-Flux developed a tool that allows repeat vertical surveys at high temporal resolution\, adding a critical time-based dimension to traditional HRSC. \nThis UV-optical monitoring tool installs inside a solid\, dry well casing that includes clear sections for imaging. Once in place\, a device shines UV and visible light into the surrounding formation. This light reveals pore-scale features such as LNAPL presence\, distribution\, and soil structure. The system creates detailed vertical digital images\, which reflect current soil conditions and contaminant patterns. Additionally\, it captures visible changes over time in LNAPL saturation and soil water content. This capability makes it easier to track natural source zone depletion (NSZD) processes and changes related to site hydrogeology. \nThe presentation will also explain how the technology compares to standard well-based methods. E-Flux will share lessons learned about how groundwater fluctuations and soil types affect LNAPL redistribution. Presenters will include both lab and field data\, offering practical insights into when and where the tool performs best. Two field studies will demonstrate how UV-optical imaging complements or improves upon traditional LNAPL monitoring approaches. By the end\, attendees will understand how to apply this new monitoring method to support ongoing remediation\, improve site models\, and better measure NSZD activity over time. \nregister HERE

SUMMARY:HRSC 101 Update – Unravelling Complex LNAPL Sites with the Optical Image Profiling (OIP) Tools & Caution About False Positives
DESCRIPTION:Presented by John V. Fontana\, CPG\, CWD – Vista GeoScience \nHigh-resolution site characterization (HRSC) tools\, when used properly\, greatly improve LNAPL site investigations. This presentation focuses on the Optical Image Profiler (OIP)\, along with tools like the Membrane Interface Probe (MIP)\, Hydraulic Profiling Tool (HPT)\, and Electrical Conductivity (EC) sensor. Together\, these tools provide detailed insights into petroleum product behavior underground. At many sites\, NAPL may occupy just 10% of the plume volume\, yet it holds up to 90% of the total mass. Therefore\, detecting and mapping the NAPL accurately is critical. OIP tools for LNAPL site characterization can identify the persistent source zones that require focused remediation. \nThree versions of the OIP exist\, each designed to detect specific types of NAPL. These include light fuels like gasoline\, mid-weight condensates\, and heavier substances such as creosote and crude oil. The OIP system uses fluorescence to detect these compounds\, while the HPT and EC tools help map subsurface layers. These tools can identify migration paths\, confining layers\, and back-diffusion zones. However\, users must beware of false positives caused by natural minerals. Careful data interpretation helps distinguish real signals from background interference. \nJohn Fontana will share several case studies that show how OIP tools for LNAPL site characterization shaped project decisions. At one site\, investigators found condensate mass above the water table. This finding led the team to switch from injection to air sparge/vapor extraction. At another site\, deep LNAPL movement was discovered in confined zones\, moving against the groundwater flow. A third case revealed perched and deep LNAPL layers that traditional methods missed. One example even showed how monitoring wells can give false thickness readings due to smear zones. \nFinally\, 2D and 3D models will show how OIP tools refine conceptual site models (CSMs). These models improve system design and help teams choose better remediation strategies. Attendees will leave with practical knowledge to tackle complex petroleum sites more effectively. \nregister HERE

SUMMARY:Biogeochemical Reductive Dechlorination (BiRD) Update: In-Situ Destructive Treatment of Recalcitrant Groundwater Contamination
DESCRIPTION:Jim Studer\, Technical Consultant\, InfraSUR LLC \nBiRD in situ chemical reduction is now a trusted method for treating difficult groundwater contamination. This approach uses both biotic and abiotic reactions. These reactions create ferrous monosulfides\, which are very reactive and break down tough contaminants. BiRD works well on chlorinated solvents\, but it also treats perchlorate\, nitrate\, and other halogenated compounds. In addition\, it helps stabilize certain metals and metalloids that react with sulfides. Because of this wide range\, engineers often compare BiRD to other treatment options. These include bioremediation\, ISCO\, natural attenuation\, and similar ISCR methods. BiRD works alongside these methods when a combined remedy is best. So far\, teams have used it at Superfund sites\, military bases\, factories\, and local businesses. Notably\, several of these projects are in the Denver Basin. \nDuring this talk\, InfraSUR will share what they’ve learned from using BiRD in both labs and real field sites. First\, they will explain how to tell when BiRD in situ chemical reduction is the right choice. Then\, they will show how site conditions—like soil\, groundwater speed\, and contaminant type—affect design and results. Next\, they will walk through common steps for setting up a BiRD project. These include choosing the right materials\, setting up injection tools\, and checking the site during and after treatment. They will also talk about how to use high-resolution site data to build strong site models. This helps improve both planning and long-term outcomes. \nFinally\, InfraSUR will talk about performance and cost. They will share data from past projects that show how fast and how well BiRD works. Some sites showed big drops in contamination in just a few months. Over time\, BiRD keeps working with very little energy input. The team will also compare costs with other methods like pump-and-treat or ISCO. In many cases\, BiRD costs less and takes less time. By the end\, attendees will understand how to apply BiRD effectively and with confidence.\nregister HERE!
